Lakes Cherokee Lake General Information

Cherokee Lake is a beautiful place to have a picnic, fish, relax and enjoy some quiet time.  The US Forest Service is responsible for maintaining the grounds.  There is a dock to fish from, picnic tables, bathrooms and grill to use.  Several walking trails and a small dam.

Located off Hwy 64 W to Hwy 294 just a few miles on the right.  The USFS sign shows you the way.

Hiwassee Lake General Information

Impounded in 1940 Hiwassee was originally known as Fowler Bend.  The name was later changed to reflect the name of the river on which it is located.

The 6090 acre lake is located in Cherokee County NC.  The lake is 22 miles long, has over 163 miles of shoreline, approximately 7 percent of which has development of some form.  It collects water from a 968 square mile watershed.

The targeted summer lake elevation ranges between 1515 and 1521 feet.  The January target level is 1460.

With the exception of private development located near the dam, the US Forest Service and TVA owns the land around Hiwassee.

The US Forest Service also operates Hanging Dog Recreation Area with boat launching facilities and camping.

Largemouth bass is one of the most popular species in Hiwassee Lake, along with walleye, bulegill, redbreast sunfish, white bass and crappie.

Apalachia Lake General Information

TVA’s 1100 acre Apalachia Lake is located entirely within Cherokee County NC west of Murphy.  The lake is 9.8 miles long, has 31 miles of shoreline and collects rainfall from a 1018 square-mile watershed.

Because the lake was not designed for flood control, TVA maintains the water level in the lake between the elevation range of 1272 and 1280 feet, except during special operations for activities such as dam maintenance.

A pipeline and tunnel system carries water from the lake 8.3 miles to the power house downriver to generate electricity.

Although TVA normally retains land and land rights around its lakes, TVA transferred 2500 acres of land around Apalachia Lake to the US Forest Service as a contribution to the Nantahala National Forest.

There is no private shoreline development around Apalachia.

Apalachia Lake is a small, deep, cool-water lake in a mountainous setting.  It receives little fishing pressure because of its isolated nature.  Sport fish include smallmouth bass, spotted bass, largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish and white bass.

The Ramsey Bluff Bike Trail System is located at the Hanging Dog Campground area (offering overnight camping), and offers under-utilized adventure in Mountain biking, hiking, and cross-country running.  The eight mile labyrinth of trails is actually a group of connected loops, allowing an interesting variety of combinations for repeat visitors to explore.  The trail difficulty ranges from easy to moderate, and range from 1500 to 1900′ in elevation.  Some trails do contain a few obstacles, such as low hanging limbs, the occasional rock or stump, or a strategicallyl-placed mogul, reminding one that this is a National Forest and not a city park.
